With the arrival of the new holiday season, Youth for Innocence is excited to announce a short, intensive ONLINE WINTER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM for high school and college students!
This internship will only last 4 weeks, from December 23 until January 19. In this short period, you’ll dive into a specific aspect of Youth for Innocence’s wrongful conviction work. Students can apply to focus on a specific aspect of our work, concentrating in that discipline throughout the internship period.
No matter what branch you choose, throughout this internship, you’ll learn:
A deep understanding of the legal process for criminal trials, covering how the system should work and how the system actually works
What role different documents play in a criminal proceeding
How to summarize and investigate a wrongful conviction case, from obtaining the transcripts to filing a writ of habeas corpus
How student advocacy can change lives through exoneration
Interns must commit at least 10 hours per week to the internship. If you cannot commit 10 hours per week but still want to help, we highly encourage you to start the training course and become a year-round volunteer. Students who fail to commit 10 hours per week will be relieved of their intern role. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so we can validate community service hours if needed. In addition, we can write letters of recommendation or other documents to shed light on your work ethic and passion for volunteering.
No prior experience is needed, although if we receive more applicants than spots available, we will evaluate applicants based on their prior experience in law, as well as a variety of other factors. Spot availability depends on the number of cases being processed by Youth for Innocence.
